Sample Tcl Scripts
Use NOTEPAD or any word processor to read the instructions found in the beginning of each .tcl file. The tcl scripts are good examples of how you can use Tcl to add new functionality in Shorthand. Requires Shorthand 8.70b or later.
  • sh_print_summary.tcl writes out a summary (Keyword, Shortcut, Short Description) of the active Shorthand dictionary to a text file. You can then use your word process (e.g. MS Word) to read and print the text file.
  • sh_global_trimright.tcl trims (removes) trailing spaces for each entry in the active dictionary.
  • sh_global_trim.tcl trims (removes) both leading and trailing spaces for each entry in the active dictionary.

How to Download

Instructions for Microsoft Internet Explorer

STEP 1: Download the Shorthand installation program.
  1. Log into Windows as an "administrator".
  2. Click here to download the Shorthand installation program (SH902.EXE).
  3. Internet Explorer will display a dialog box asking you "What would you like to do with this file?".
Choose Save it to disk and click OK.
  4. Choose the folder you want to use (C:\temp ) and click Save.   Internet Explorer will save a copy of the installation program to the folder you chose (may take several minutes depending on your modem speed).

STEP 2: Run the Shorthand installation program.

  1. Shut down Internet Explorer.
  2. If you have anti-virus software, please disable it as it may interfere with the installation process.
  3. If you have previously installed Shorthand,
make sure Shorthand is not running.
  4. Click the Windows START button and choose Run.
  5. Click the Browse button in the Run window and go to the folder (C:\temp) where you downloaded the Shorthand installation program.
  6. Select the sh902.exe file and click Open.
  7. Click OK in the Run window to start the Shorthand installation process and follow the instructions on your screen.
How to create installation disks.

I get the error: "The system is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft applications."
Your Windows XP system file 'AUTOEXEC.NT' may be damaged.
  1. Click the Windows Start button, select Run,
type cmd and press enter to open the MS-DOS window.
  2. In the MS-DOS Window, type the commands:

    cd \windows\repair
    copy autoexec.nt c:\windows\system32

  3. Try installing Shorthand again. If you still have problems, you will need to manually install Shorthand without using SETUP.EXE.

I am an AOL user and am getting an "Invalid Archive" or "Truncated Zip file" error
There seems to be a problem using AOL to download and extract zip files and unfortunately it is still not clear what causes the problem. Here are some suggestions offered by AOL users:

Suggestion #1: Manually launch Internet Explorer instead of using AOL to launch IE for you. Follow the IE download instructions.

Suggestion #2: Make sure you save the .exe or .zip as a file to your hard disk (see the IE download instructions); do not let AOL automatically unzip the file for you.

What do I do if I see the message
"Error During Move Data Process -113"?

The solution is to delete the WZSE*.TMP folder displayed in the error messsage. You should then restart Windows to make sure the temporary files were deleted. For example, if you see the message

An error occurred during the move data process -113. Component: File Group: File C:\Windows\temp\WZSEO.tmp\

You should use Windows Explorer to delete the folder called WZSE0.tmp that is located in in the C:\Windows\temp folder. Next (this is important!) shut down Windows and restart Windows to make sure the temporary files were removed. (If you can't locate the WZSE0.tmp folder, it probably already got deleted automatically so all you need to do is shut down and restart Windows.)

Then try installing Shorthand. again.

How to manually install Shorthand without using SETUP.EXE

If you cannot get the install program to work, you can manually copy the Shorthand files to your computer.

Please note that you should follow the procedure below only if you absolutely cannot get the Shorthand SETUP.EXE installation program to work--the SETUP.EXE program does some useful things such as create desktop shortcuts and prevent overwriting existing Shorthand word lists so please be very careful when following the procedure below:

STEP 1:  Download one of the following self-extracting zip files:

For Windows XP, 2000, Server 2003 or NT download:

  sh902-imageNT.exe (size: 1.4Mb)

For Windows 95, 98 or Me, download:

  sh902-image95.exe (size: 1.4Mb)

STEP 2:  On your computer, run the self-extracting zip file you downloaded from Step 1.

IMPORTANT: It is STRONGLY RECOMMENDED you unzip the files to an empty folder.

The zip file contains an exact image of the files that would have been installed on your computer by the SETUP.EXE program.

STEP 3:  Start Shorthand by running the SH9.EXE file in the Shorthand folder (the Shorthand folder is C:\SH902 unless you unzipped the files to another folder).
