If you wish to look at some advanced examples of templates used by medical offices, Dr. John Bachman from the Department of Family Practice at the Mayo Clinic has created some sample Shorthand templates:

  • Family.spf is a general dictionary contains well child exams, some chronic disease dictionaries.
  • Physical.spf is a dictionary that helps do physical exams.
The above files were originally taken from Dr. Bachman's web page. The dictionaries are good examples of how to create pick lists in Shorthand. After dowloading the dictionary (*.spf) files, choose OPEN from Shorthand's FILE menu to load in the dictionaries.

Auto Caps (free; last updated: June 26, 2006)
Click here to download AUTOCAPS.ZIP (500 bytes)
AUTOCAPS.SPF is a Shorthand dictionary that demonstrates how you can use Shorthand to automatically insert two spaces after a period then capitalize the next letter (i.e. autocapitalize the first letter of sentences).

To Install:

  1. Download AUTOCAPS.ZIP to your hard disk.
  2. Unzip AUTOCAPS.SPF from the AUTOCAPS.ZIP file and copy AUTOCAPS.SPF to your Shorhand folder (the folder where you had installed Shorthand (e.g. C:\Sh10))
  3. Load AUTOCAPS.SPF into Shorthand by choosing OPEN from Shorthand's FILE menu.
  4. Click Shortand's HIDE button to hide Shorthand's Main Window.
AUTOCAPS.SPF defines 26 keywords ".a", ".b" ... ".z" which expand to a period, two spaces and the uppercase letter. For example, ".a" expands to ".  A" so typing:

    one two three.a<SPACE>bc

will end up as:

    one two three. Abc

Note that you will need to adjust your typing habit to make use of the macros: You need to type ".a"<SPACE> instead of ".<SPACE>a" to make it work. You can merge AUTOCAPS.SPF with your existing Shorthand word lists by using Shorthand's "LINK" function (choose CONTENTS from Shorthand's HELP menu and search for "Linking Dictionaries"). AUTOCAPS.SPF has been tested to work with Shorthand Version 8.70b and later.
